　シスター・チャンドラとシャクティの踊り手たちのことを、目を輝かせて語ってくれたのは、インド舞踊を研究している黒川妙子さんだった。東京下町のファミリーレストランだったと思う。南インドのタミルナード州で、ダリット（不可触民）の少女たちを集め、裁縫や読み書き、権利意識について教えているカソリックの修道女が、彼女たちにダンスを教え、差別反対のための公演をしている。それが素晴らしいという話に、引き寄せられるものを感じ、一年後、私はビデオカメラを買ってインドへ渡った。
　ダンスの美しさ、潔さに魅了されテープを回した。２度目の渡印では世界女性デーと重なり、シスターとダンサーたちが１万人の女性の先頭を行く姿を撮ることが出来た。ツアーバスを追い、村祭りや野原の小さな教会、町のホールなどを回った。シャクティと一緒だから見えるインドがあった。
彼女たちが叩き踊るタップーというドラムは、本来ダリット（不可触民）の男性によって、上位カーストの葬儀における前触れ太鼓として演奏され、ダリット自身の葬儀で叩くことは許されない。職業の世襲、職業を取り巻く慣習がカースト制を維持する骨格にあった。上位カーストの人の中には、タップーが家の中に入ることさえ忌み嫌う人がいた。今でも、インド人の多くがダリットと水を飲むコップを同じくすることを避け、実際、１０年前にタミルナード州で、ダリットに一般の客と同じコップでお茶を出した茶店が焼き討ちにあったという話を聞いた。
　ダリット、しかも女性がこの太鼓をステージ上で叩くことは、過去の因習を撃ち破る二重三重の意味があった。
　撮影をしながら、私はカースト制がいかに人々を抑圧差別しているかを教えられた。しかし、ダンサーたちは美しかった。「ダンスの素晴らしさ」から、「カーストの問題」へとテーマがシフトしかけていた私の気持ちは、シャクティのメンバーたちと親しくなるにつれ、再度、「人間の美しさ…」に引き寄せられた。
　五月、インドが最も暑い月に私はタミルナードに戻った。シャクティのリーダーであるメリタの結婚式を撮ることになっていた。ダンサーたちにとって、結婚式は引退を意味していた。規則があるわけではないが、みなそう思っていた。インドで、結婚は女性にとって大きな意味を持つ。メリタの結婚が、団員を一人失うことであっても、シャクティのメンバーやシスターにとっては素晴らしいお祝いだった。
　親友となった小説家のソウバさんが、私に言った。
「シャクティは、列車なんだ。乗る人もいれば、降りる人もいるさ」

　先進国社会において、神の作った秩序と人間の作った秩序が闘っている。本来次元の異なる、住み分けが出来るはずのものたちが闘い始めている。
　そのことがメッセージとして、伝わってくる映像を私は目指した。

　人間にとって結婚は自らすすんで自由を失うこと。子どもを産むことは、さらなる不自由を手にすること。人間は０歳児の存在が体現している「信頼」によって、容易に自分の自由を手放す。そこに、神が（宇宙が）、私たちに与えた幸福感があった。宇宙は我々人間に「不自由になりなさい。幸せになりなさい」と言って０歳児を与えていた。
　シスターは、自由を奪われることを潔しとせず、結婚を回避し修道院に入る道を選んだ。修道女の生活は、結婚以上に自由を奪われる選択かもしれない。シャクティを囲む風景には、「自由」という言葉に縛られ、不自由から逃れるために絆を失い始めている先進国社会に対するメッセージがあるような気がする。
　カースト制という人間が作った秩序は、不条理なものであって正されなければならないと私も思う。女性差別も同様の理由で正されなければならない。しかし、同時に親が子どもの幸せを願い、子どもが親の幸せを願う、という人間社会の幸福感の基本は、シャクティの風景の中で生き生きと受け継がれていた。女性たちによって受け継がれていた。
　シスターは女性差別と闘う。シャクティセンターへ勉強に向かう少女たちの勇姿は次世代がすでに続いていることを意味している。そして、祭りで行進するブラフミンの男たちの姿。その対比に闘いの根本が見えて来る。「学ぶこと」と「伝承すること」の闘いも見えて来る。

　シスターは「幸せとは？」という質問に、「集まること」と答えた。
そして、最後のインタビューで、美しさは「わかちあうこと」と言った。その言葉に私は先進国に対する警告を聴く。

　シスターは、ダリットの村人の中に、神を見る。
同時に、神たちに権利意識を啓蒙する役割を引き受けた。その矛盾が、あの一瞬の悲しみの表情に現れているのかもしれない。
シャクティの風景に答えはない。
そこにあるのは、いまの時をわかち合う人類に対する問いかけだった。理論ではなく、感性への問いかけだった。
　人間はなぜ踊るのか？
　神の作った秩序を思い出すためかもしれない。

Sakthi Dancers and Sister Chandra

This is the story about a nun, fighting against Caste system. The way she fights, is beautiful and strong.
Sister Chandra saw God in the villagers, who are untouchables. At the same time her mission is teaching about “Rights” to them.
There are no answers in the seen of Sakthi.
I heard about Sakthi dancers and a nun, from a friend, at a restaurant in Tokyo. I knew I had to come. I bought a video camera and flew to India.
This is the story about a nun, fighting against Caste system. The way she fights, is beautiful and strong.
With the collaboration of twenty animators, Sr. Chandra, Sr. Annuncia, and Sr. Felcy, are involved in the activities of Sakthi Center. Their training programs provide solid foundation for their trainees, who are mostly Dalits, untouchables. So far 200 young women were trained and 20 of them are working with them as full time animators in building the humanity right now.
Sakthi Dancers has performed all over Tamil Nadu, focusing on woman empowerment at over 1100 occasions in India.
Meaning "broken and crushed," the Dalits are the descendants of India's first people. They were conquered by invading Aryan hordes around 2500 years ago, when Hinduism first took root in the country.
Sister Chandra decided to devote her life to God and become a Catholic nun, when she was her mid twenties. She was sent to a village in Karnataka State where she was given a task. The task was to get into the society with the people and live with them for three months, identify their problems and learn from it, without letting them know her identity. It was this time; an incident happened that changed her life. She was working in the paddy fields with the untouchable Dalit women. She was exhausted at this time. With her throat drying with thirst, she saw a pot of water in the meadow. She reached for it and gulped a cup. The owner, a higher caste woman ran over her suddenly and gave her a tight slap on the face. Dalits were not allowed to drink from the same cup with higher Caste people. Sister Chandra was grounded. She sank in tears of ignominy and in glory. She covered her face and ran away sobbing. She made a conviction; she was going to work for the oppressed.
Sister Chandra saw God in the villagers, who are untouchables. At the same time her mission is teaching about “Rights” to them.
There are no certain answers in the seen of Sakthi. But there are questions to the people who are sharing the present time.
Why do we dance?
Maybe, to remember the harmony of Universe.
